Vitamin Cautions Explained

Research recently has discovered precautions for Folic Acid, Selenium, Vitamins A, B1, B6, C, D, & E. The SELECT study was halted early with slightly higher diabetes in the selenium group and slightly elevated prostate cancer in vitamin E group. See why here. Plus, a number of other nutrients have warnings for dosages outside of a given range, both too low and/or too high, including calcium & iron.

Antioxidant Buffet

THE SITUATION:  The vitamin industry serves up a buffet of Antioxidant product offerings. Advertisements praise higher ORAC (measurement of anti-oxidant activity) status of nutrients as if they were the GOLD STANDARD for health. The Scientific community long ago postulated the antioxidant / free radical theory of disease. This says Free radicals formed during both normal body metabolism and from outside environmental toxins are responsible for damaging cells and causing disease. article These radicals had to be quickly neutralized by Antioxidants before this damage occurred. ref The body has some pretty good antioxidant systems in place, see below. The faster the better became the mantra with the overloading of supplements with higher and higher ORAC values.

ANTI-OXIDANT LOAD BALANCE

AntiOxidant Load Balance

ANTIOXIDANT LOAD BALANCE

Lost in the above theory and resulting marketing blitz was the true nature of free radicals.  The wisdom of the body developed a way to use some actions of radicals for beneficial body processes before it steps in and stops or controls any disruptive potential with natural antioxidants. ref** ref  Imagine that this is similar to firemen setting a controlled fire burn on a non windy day to protect the surrounding areas from a future destructive out of control fire on a hot windy day.  ref  ref

One positive way the body uses free radicals is when cold causing viruses attack. Immune system blood cells produce a free radical that captures and kills the virus to prevent developing into a full blown cold illness or flu.

QUESTION: Would taking a high dose antioxidant supplement help or hinder this vital body protective function?

If you thought, hinder, you would be correct. This has already been demonstrated by research. Have you ever heard of this relationship from Nutritionists and Doctors? ref  <very important info on supplement effects

Yet the vitamin industry puts high dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals in cold formulas showing almost a complete lack of understanding for this vital antioxidant load balance principle. Current and past research studies on isolated antioxidant vitamin supplements for the most part fail to show consistent benefits. These studies rather then showing that antioxidants did not work, may actual reveal that they simply worked too well and defeated the body's set point to maintain the redox balance effect. Early studies of just food sources of antioxidants exhibited greater positive benefits, because they did not overwhelm the system.

The current theory is that the body has a set point for antioxidant activity and any added extra supplements simply may block the body's production of its own antioxidants to maintain this set point. This could interfere with the mix and balance between needed antioxidants and pro-oxidants, called Redox Reactions. Science needs to find out how supplements can work with the body and not against to maintain this vital Redox balance.

Antioxidants in balance with redox loads help to regulate the resulting consequences of controlled radical actions and this might be the real way antioxidants work to prevent disease and support exercise benefits. Both limiting oxidative stress from improper foods and the appropriate use of certain antioxidant supplements in controlled dosages might be beneficial.

...antioxidants may end up protecting cancer cell growth...

Important link between cancer and antioxidants > ref ref Antioxidants may be protective before cancer develops, but after cancer starts, too many antioxidants may end up protecting cancer cell growth by limiting the body's free radical defense system, or by interfering with chemotherapy drugs. ref ref ref on p53

SIDEBAR: While Scientists search for drugs to increase p53 to defeat cancers, drugs that so far have shown damaging side effects, mother nature already has safe and natural ways to do this, such as with SGS from broccoli, IP6 from rice bran extract pagesarticle, and Beta Glucans from mushrooms.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT ANTIOXIDANT EFFECTS ON CANCER

This point needs to be stressed about how antioxidants affect cancer start up and growth. Many antioxidants help prevent oxidation damage to cells that could trigger mutations and start up cancers. But due to the working pathways of certain antioxidants, once cancers have started, the cancer cells hijack the antioxidants to help the cancer cells growth faster. Evidently these antioxidants do not know they are harming the body. They simply have a task to perform. The main antoxidants in this category include N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), Folic Acid, Glutathione, and vitamin E as d'alpha tocopherol by itself. Remember higher dosages of vitamin E suppress levels of the other family members of E arriving in food, possibly by blocking out digestive channels. Folic acid helps cells divide and prevent damage to DNA material. In this way it prevents cancer start up. But once cancer is present, excess folic acid helps cancer cells divide faster. Glutathione breaks apart during digestion, so really only supplies the three amino acids it contains. But, these aminos include NAC builders. There is a class of cancer drugs called folate inhibitors. Vitamin B1 should also be mentioned here too as it has similar actions at different amounts.

These facts reveal why it is necessary to use the precautionary principle in taking vitamins. And to follow the guideline vitamin criteria presented here and work with a Nutritionist or other Health Professional when disease is present.

More on Antioxidants, Radicals, Cancers, and Diabetes

Another example could help clarify. It appears the body uses some radicals to turn on the mechanism of glucose and insulin uptake into cells. Cells that develop insulin resistance to uptake lead to diabetes. A rather large study, SELECT, testing if vitamin E and selenium help protect against prostate cancer was stopped at its midpoint analysis after slightly more cancers were found in the vitamin E group and in the selenium group, slightly more diabetes. Selenium participates in the production of Glutathione Peroxidase, one of two vital antioxidant enzymes used by cells to control free radicals. Evidently, in the test subjects already naturally high in selenium, adding more pushed their production of GP to an over reactive level which rapidly neutralized the free radical needed to switch on glucose insulin uptake by cells.

SIDEBAR: Antioxidant vitamins E & C exhibit a catch 22 on exerciseWhile these vitamins reduce the ROS effects of oxidation in muscles after exercise, an action thought to be beneficial, they also prevent the positive effects of exercise on controlling insulin resistence, a factor for diabetes control. ref

Still not convinced? Here is an example regarding cancer cell destruction by radicals which limits DNA damage. Too many antioxidants could hinder this action and allow damaged DNA cells to develop into cancer.  ref  Curcumin acts as antioxidant to protect healthy cells, but as a prooxidant (free radical action) to kill cancer cells. Balance is the name of the anti-oxidant game. Antioxidants are needed in just the right amount to help protect healthy cells from turning cancerous due to DNA damage.

One more study about the antioxidant SOD on the control of the oxidation process in cells. SOD, superoxide dismutase, is one of two major detox enzymes in cells ref Too much SOD upsets delicate balance with the other detox enzyme, Glutathione Peroxidase, and has an opposite effect on the mechanisms the body uses to control inflammation and protect cellular DNA from damage due to hydrogen peroxide and O2 radicals.

CAUTION: Many antioxidant formulas include mostly vitamins. This may not be the best use as these amounts have to be added with amounts in multiple vitamin products. Remember to limit total vitamins in multiples and antioxidants to the amounts or even lower than found in the new vitamin criteria. This is one of the reasons the vitamin amounts appear to be low, but are more than adequate. Antioxidant products should contain more foods and food nutrients than vitamins. There nutrients include: Bilberry. Blueberry, Grape seed extract, Pycnogenol, Tumeric root, Ginger, Lutein, Lycopene, Milk Thistle, and CoQ10 to name a few. (While Green Tea Extract would fit here, recent linking of high amounts to liver damage sidelines it) Products with mostly vitamin formulas have shown mixed results in studies while the food source antioxidants have exhibited mainly positive actions.

In food, the elements with antioxidant activity are found at low levels plus there are other phytonutrients that most likely have synergistic actions with the antioxidant. Vitamins C and E are best taken with family of related members. In addition, the fiber and matrix elements in whole foods control the release of nutrients in a slow steady pace rather than all at once like most supplements. MORE IS NOT BETTER for many vitamin supplements.

At a modest amount, Lycopene (from tomatoes) prevented oxidative stress in test animals, but at double that amount, all the test animals died. Food for Thought.

BOTH SIDES: In the interest of presenting both sides, here is a Doctor view. ref Note that the first part of article explains how body functions, while specific supplement examples are given last. Percentage of absorption for vital supplement nutrients and protection of forms against breakdown during digestion are both critical aspects. This explains why some supplements using better absorption forms and mechanisms are more expensive. ref Look into research on curcumin phytosomes. ref ref

**Copy below from reference above. Dosage and form of nutrient are vital to results.

Why Don’t Antioxidant Supplements Work?

Most clinical studies of antioxidant supplements have not found them to provide substantial health benefits. Researchers have suggested several reasons for this, including the following:

  • The beneficial health effects of a diet high in vegetables and fruits or other antioxidant-rich foods may actually be caused by other substances present in the same foods, other dietary factors, or other lifestyle choices rather than antioxidants.
  • The effects of the large doses of antioxidants used in supplementation studies may be different from those of the smaller amounts of antioxidants consumed in foods.
  • Differences in the chemical composition of antioxidants in foods versus those in supplements may influence their effects. For example, eight chemical forms of vitamin E are present in foods. Vitamin E supplements, on the other hand, typically include only one of these forms—alpha-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol also has been used in almost all research studies on vitamin E.
  • For some diseases, specific antioxidants might be more effective than the ones that have been tested. For example, to prevent eye diseases, antioxidants that are present in the eye, such as lutein, might be more beneficial than those that are not found in the eye, such as beta-carotene.
  • The relationship between free radicals and health may be more complex than has previously been thought. Under some circumstances, free radicals actually may be beneficial rather than harmful, and removing them may be undesirable.
  • The antioxidant supplements may not have been given for a long enough time to prevent chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases or cancer, which develop over decades.
  • The participants in the clinical trials discussed above were either members of the general population or people who were at high risk for particular diseases. They were not necessarily under increased oxidative stress. Antioxidants might help to prevent diseases in people who are under increased oxidative stress even if they don’t prevent them in other people."

Or, maybe the wrong form and/or just isolated alpha tocopherol was used. ref ref

Antioxidants and Exercise

One common thought is that since exercise increases oxygen uptake from deeper breathing, extra antioxidants would be needed to stop the extra oxygen generated free radicals from damaging sore muscles while they attempt to recover and heal. You will hear this concept from many nutritionists and body builders. BUT, that is not what new research is showing. In fact, just the opposite may be the case.

Extra antioxidant vitamins C & E may limit the benefits of exercise on muscle strength. Soreness after extreme exercising may be kicking up processes to heal and grow muscles, plus increase mitochondria for future greater energy production. ref

This next review looked at quite a lot of muscle soreness research, and didn't find quality studies proving either result. No benefits on relieving soreness but no adverse effects either, even though a few studies did find such results. This was just a review of other studies. Different dosages may be a problem factor on level of results.

This next study report looks at antioxidants on insulin sensitivity, a benefit from exercise. The antioxidant vitamins somewhat hindered this benefit. ref  It turns out that the body might use the oxidation formed elements for some positive functions. Similar to how free radicals are formed by immune blood cells to help kill cold causing viruses and harmful bacteria. article

SUMMARY

It may very well be that while exercise increases oxygen radicals that could overpower the redox system, exercise also tells the body to generate more inside antioxidants to do the job. ref Plus, exercise stimulates appetite and more food is consumed supplying extra dietary antioxidants. Maybe these two processes are enough to neutralize the increased oxidation workload. ref Extra supplemental antioxidants might only be needed if other oxidation activities are also present. This is a likely scenario in play today. Thus, only small amounts of supplemental antioxidants may be all that is needed, especially since large amounts of antioxidant vitamins can interfere with redox balance. Thus the best antoxidant formulas are mostly food extracts and not just vitamins. See this article for more insight.

NOTE: Some people are just naturally low producers of ROS and don't require extra antioxidants while others produce high levels, likely driven by genetics, and would need extra antioxidant support. This would further be influenced by a good versus a poor diet in supplying needed nutrients, as well as exposure to environmental toxins, like lead, smoke, air pollution, cleaning chemicals, etc.

This is further proof that guidance is necessary to support the intelligent use of vitamins and dietary supplements. Vitamin Forms, Dosages, and Formula Composition are all vital.

FYI: Exercise is not an option. Body movement increases health benefits in numerous ways. A stronger heart muscle is at the core of protecting not only the cardiovascular system, but also the lymph circulation system which relies upon muscle movement actions for circulation. Increased digestion of nutrients is another way and don't forget about benefits to proper elimination.

Antioxidants - Trick or Treat

The term "Antioxidant" is tossed around like bags of peanuts at baseball games, yet few people know what it means. Here is a simple explanation. Imagine cars without spare tires. If a tire goes flat, the car is out of commission and has to wait for a repair truck to come with a new tire... or... it could steal a tire from another car so it can move again. If the car was traveling fast when it lost a tire, great damage could result from a crash. The car with a flat tire represents a free radical and the repair truck is the antioxidant providing a new tire to neutralize the free radical, or the free radical car steals a tire from another car turning that car now into a free radical. Antioxidants fix problems rather than letting the csacading or "stealing" of tires eventually lead to cell damage. In the body, free radicals can be generated from many normal everyday events as well as from the action of toxic chemicals, such as smoke or pesticides.

Definition: A free radical is simply a molecule that has lost one electron of a matched pair. The element searches for another electron to again establish stability. During this search time, the unstable molecule can damage other body elements, often sensitive DNA. Antioxidants supply the lost electron to prevent this damage. Antioxidants are stable when they give up an electron but are quicily eliminated out of the body. Alpha Lipoic Acid can regenerate vitamins C and E by replacing the lost electron so they can again function to stop another free radical.

Exercise develops increased free radical generation since more oxygen is taken in and greater energy is produced. Vitamin companies use this as part of their marketing story to sell antioxidant vitamins, but actually the exercising body generates greater efficiency in dealing with radicals by increasing the antioxidants naturally produced in the body. Studies reveal that taking too many antioxidants might reduce the benefits from exercise. Balance and Harmony. ref

ANTIOXIDANT BALANCE POINT INTREGRITY

Taking antioxidants is suppose to eliminate or neutralize free radicals thought to be the cause of some diseases. Check out this reference for antioxidant actions against lipid peroxidation. But, on the other side, since the body produces free radicals, are they always negative? NOT always. The body uses some free radicals for positive functions like killing viruses or destroying damaged cells. Nitric Oxide is a radical that has many beneficial functions, especially for artery health.

Does the free radical theory of aging need to be updated?  Antioxidants play an important role in health. But one that is only partly understood by the health and vitamin industry. How much to take is still a matter of speculation.

CORRECTING FLAWED THEORIES

If Nutritional Science or the Vitamin Industry operate under flawed theories, one would imagine when truth emerges, a corrective process would dictate changes, or at the very least stir up research and debate. But that just doesn't seem to be happening with much volume on the antioxidant / free radical theory of aging. Both sides are both holding onto the last straws with all their might. Let go already!

The body uses some free radicals to perform beneficial functions. Taking too many antioxidants destroys these free radicals before they can perform their positive and necessary activities. Whether they are turning on insulin glucose uptake by cells or the destruction of cancer cells by programmed cell death methods. ref  ANTIOXIDANT LOAD BALANCE is a critical part of health that is completely missing from nutritional health discussions. The new vitamin criteria considers this aspect when establishing nutrient dosages and forms. And explains why the dosages are quite low compared to many other recommendations and available vitamin products.

INFLAMMATION CONNECTION

How can free radicals be dangerous and beneficial at the same time? There is an inflammatory link from potential free radical cell damage that primes the degenerative pump while some free radical actions are used by the body for positive outcomes (Nitrous Oxide, NO, on vascular vessel tone). Next is a study reference linking free radicals, inflammation, the gene transcription factor, NF_kB, oxidized LDL cholesterol, and pretty much the whole gambit of degenerative conditions. AntiOxidants on Ovulation

Another study mentioning why balance is so important in antioxidant loads. Too Much is potentially just as damaging as too little. While this is an animal study, it shows relationships of functions, hormones, and free raticals. Copied here from www.Ourfood.com:

"Antioxidants reduce women fertility

[3] A study of Shkolnik and colleagues 2011 stresses that ovulation is stimulated (by) the pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH). This process is related to inflammation involving oxidant radicals (reactive oxygen species ROS). In their study the authors found that antioxidants reduced the rate of ovulation in rats preventing the modification of the local tissue, which prepares the ovulation.

Progesterone production was also found to be reduced by antioxidants, together with up-regulation of genes by the LH hormone which were also significantly reduced. Oxidants on their turn, were found to be implicated in phosphorylation and activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its downstream effector, p42/44 MAPK, essential elements of ovulation. More studies related to antioxidants supplements and its possible implication in reduction of fertility are needed. The authors concluded that the production of ovary oxidant radicals is essential to fertility and antioxidants may become a non-hormonal contraceptive."----

Antioxidants - a lot of talk but little understanding

Anti- in front of a word means against. Anti-oxidant means against oxidation. Oxidation refers to a process where a molecule or atom looses an electron in the outer orbit and becomes either an unstable free radical, or if both electrons are gone, a more stable molecule. A free radical is an unbalanced element that looks to steal an electron to again become balanced. In every oxidation process, there is another molecule that gains the electron making it enter into a reduced state.

Simplify the story. Using Cars to illustrate. Cars are the oxidizing elements and become free radicals when a tire goes flat. The anti-oxidants are the repair trucks. The tires are the electrons that move from one element to another. While an element is missing an electron, it can damage cell parts when it steals an electron from another element  Enough anti-oxidants need to be available to offer up an electron before any damage occurs to vital elements or tissues. A casade effect of electron transfers can rapidly develop in certain conditions similar to how a traffic chain reaction accident happens.

The aging theory is that free radicals are responsible for causing many diseases such as cancers, artery and heart disease, and even diabetes. Taking antioxidant vitamins A, E, C, beta carotene, and minerals selenium and zinc should prevent these diseases by neutralizing radicals before they can cause damage to tissues and DNA. (ref complete antioxidant science)

While this theory has merits, to fit reality it needs limits or balances that more accurately depict what is really happening. Antioxidants and free radicals both have beneficial roles to play. Harmony and balance are needed between antioxidant loads and radical generation. ref It's not one of those situations where more antioxidants are always better. Antioxidant research is now revealing this fact, but few nutritionists are even aware of it yet. And many vitamin formulas appear not to even acknowledge this concept either. This is such an important topic, you need to comprehend it fully, or at least to the limits of what little knowledge is available at the moment. ( ref - Why overeating and aging are destructive to anti-oxidant balance)  More research is vitally needed.

If you have cancer, CHECK OUT CONCLUSION: Copied here to prevent getting axed, this conclusion about antioxidants and effects on cancer cells. You be the judge. "Nonetheless, the multitude of studies discussed here suggest that patients diagnosed with (or at risk for) cancers should avoid unnecessary supplementation of antioxidants in order ensure that enhanced antioxidant activity does not inadvertently facilitate tumor progression and metastasis."

THE SCIENCE

Vegetables and fruits contain elements called polyphenols that have value for health. 3 categories are most abundant and major players: 1. Flavonoids (elements that add color and flavors to fruits and vegetables), 2. stilbenes (i.e. resveratrol from wine and grapes), and 3. lignans (nuts, seeds, and whole grains).

The Bioflavonoids have many known benefits as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-allergenic properties. Foods in this category, with help from the other two, supply most of the building blocks for the body to make it's cellular antioxidant elements such as SOD and glutathione peroxidase. These two cellular enzymes along with antioxidant nutrients from foods do most of the antioxidant functions. An important bioflavonoid is anthocyanins found in grapes, milk thistle, bilberry, green tea, grapes, cabbage, and garlic.

Vitamins such as A, Beta carotene, C, E, and the minerals selenium and zinc also have antioxidant properties too. In fact it had been assumed that it was these nutrients in vegetables and fruits that were responsible for the protection against diseases. But research using the isolated forms of these vitamins has failed to consistently show the same benefits as the foods exhibited. One of the reasons for the poor isolated antioxidant vitamin rsearch results is most likely due to a lack of the value these 3 category elements provide. Plus a lack of understanding of the correct vitamin forms and complete family members may have influence as well. But it is the higher dosages of isolated vitamins and minerals that probably create the most compromises to health by working too well and hindering the positive functions performed by some free radicals before they are neutralized by these antioxidant actions. Macrophages are specialized white blood cells that participate in immune functions by engulfing disease causing bacteria. This engulfing action called phagocytosis is switched on by a free radical action.

Because food extracts rich in bioflavonoids also contain many other valuable nutrients as well as some vitamins and minerals, it may be wise to pick formulas that contain them rather than just isolated vitamins for your antioxidant needs. ref

THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. TYPICAL OF MANY EXCELLENT FORMULAS WHERE THE MIS-INFORMED PUBLIC REVEALS THEIR LACK OF SUPPLEMENT VALUE AWARENESS. An example of an excellent food antioxidant product label, try to find another one to match. NOW Super Antioxidant comes close. This should not be an everyday supplement. Think of it as a feather to occasionally tickle the immune system. Healthy food and exercise are the primary providers for antiodiants.

"ANTIOXIDANT OPTIMIZER® is (was) an outstanding, synergistic blend of water and lipid soluble antioxidants, including:  Curcumin, GingerLutein and Lycopene (Lyc-O-Mato®) are prominent carotenoids, protecting eyes, cardiovascular system, breast, cervical, and other tissues and organs.* Gamma Tocopherol is a potent free radical scavenger that protects lipids, proteins and DNA.*  Powerful flavonoids from Green Tea Extract*, Milk Thistle, Oleaselect® Olive Fruit Extract, and LeucoSelect® Grape Seed Extract provide antioxidant protection for the liver and cardiovascular system and promote good circulation and capillary integrity," and Vitamin C, the lonely vitamin.

*In higher amounts, green tea extract has become associated with liver damage. The head researcher says a cup or two a day is safe and extracts with under 500 mg of catechins also safe. This product has under 100 mg. But many weight loss or energy supplements can have much higher amounts, up to 700 mg. Many benefits at low to moderate amounts but damage at higher amounts. Use precautionary approach and DO NOT abuse.

WRAP UP

Until science discovers the balance point between antioxidant loads and free radical generation, the precautionary principle should be exercised. Food extracts often exhibit greater controlled antioxidant activity over just vitamins since they also contain balancing phytonutrients. Check out again the reference for grape seed extract actions on breast cancer. ref  Of course wise dietary choices and environmental toxin avoidance are the top priorities to lower radical generation.

This reference is a review of many antioxidant studies searching for a common thread, in this case death rates. The antioxidant groups revealed slightly higher rates. Unfortunately, the studies all used incomplete vitamin supplement forms of Beta Carotene and Vitamin E. Vitamin A is another story. Yes, it is past time for some common sense science supported guidance for proper antioxidant supplement usage. Working with nature instead of attempting to overpower or change it. Updating Theories! Balance! Precautionary!
